Most of the college students, who are currently studying a wide variety of subjects, know the subject’s theoretical aspects. There are multiple tempting options of subjects to study in college, and you can only choose one. Even though you choose, you still do not know what career options are available after majoring in that subject. People studying art, humanities, and business subjects would be unclear about their careers because multiple career paths are available. You will consider Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics as futuristic and interesting subjects. People who are enrolled in degree programs for these subjects have a blurred idea about what a career in these fields would look like. So, what does a career in robotics look like?

You can utilize Computer Science for making programmable bots in the computer that can work on their own.  If you want to pursue a career in robotics, you should get knowledge of all three disciplines. But realistically, you will be able to learn two out of these three subjects, which is enough for a robotics career.

The robotics industry is evolving rapidly, and the emphasis on different disciplines has been changing. A decade ago, mechanical engineering focused on building robots, whereas now the focus has shifted to software engineering. The demand for computer science graduates has increased with the digital revolution. There are many different career paths you can choose in the robotics industry after studying one or two of the three mentioned fields. Popular industries in the fields of robotics are e-commerce, self-driving cars, and security. After the pandemic, there has been a surge in e-commerce which has made it even more popular. Visiting the store physically has become a thing of the past as people have busy schedules or do not want to purchase goods themselves.

The E-commerce industry has several processes which occur on the backend when you purchase products online. There stocking, sorting, packaging, scanning, and delivery. You would have to perform these tasks manually before the advancement in robotics. Now, robots can perform these tasks 24/7 without human supervision, and they do not even require rest. With robotics, companies are now creating smaller warehouses in multiple locations to reduce products’ delivery time. This is one example; in driverless cars, the bots can steer and accelerate according to the road situation. In some situations, you can trust driverless cars’ braking systems over human beings manually hitting the brakes because the sensors have become very powerful.

The technology behind robotics does not belong to any industry. There are some common features of developing robots that are necessary for all industries. Manipulation is one of the tasks which deals with picking up and handling objects. It applies to all the industries such as e-commerce, medical, and automobiles. The term locomotion deals with the robots’ movement that designs wheels, legs, wings, or rotors. Then there are other fields such as machine learning, in which the robots learn new things on their own through experience. You can work on the interface of robots which makes robots easier to program and use.

You can pursue one of many jobs in robotics, which can be attained by studying subjects related to mathematics, computers, manufacturing, and mechanics. If you love to design robots and robotics systems, you can become a Robotics Engineer. In this job, you might be required to design the machines and processes required to build the robot. When you successfully design a robot, your job changes to Support Technician.

Another career in robotics is sales engineer who focuses on selling robots for commercial and residential use. You need to well versed in the benefits of the robot to sell them. Lastly, you can become a software developer who writes code for the robots to operate on. A robot’s computer system is its brain which helps it carry out the tasks.
