Animal-inspired robots often move quickly and efficiently. But Georgia Tech recently unveiled a robot that mimics the slow-paced lifestyle of sloths, who spend much of their lives hanging out in trees. This creation hangs and crawls along wires just like real sloths do, conserving energy by slowly crawling toward sunlight.
As with many animal-inspired robotics, the sloth’s design was inspired by nature itself. Researchers studied two distinct genera of sloths — two-toed to three-toed — in order to gain insight into their metabolism rates and green coloration, both believed to be caused by microalgae colonizing their fur.
Magnus Egerstedt, a professor of robotics at Georgia Tech, led the team that created this bot after sloths that inhabit forests across Central and South America. Like sloths, it hangs from overhead cables just like its animal counterpart and only moves when necessary to measure environmental changes.
Sloths, like many mammals in tropical rain forests, have evolved to survive off of leaves from trees. Furthermore, their low metabolic rates enable them to survive with minimal amounts of food and water.
Scientists have known for decades that sloths’ slow-paced lifestyle makes them ideal observers of environmental changes. Now they are creating a robot to mimic this behavior and could keep tabs on sloths’ lives for months at a time.
Scientists used 3D-printed shells to build the robot, protecting its motors, gearing and sensors from weather damage. It also helps it blend in with its environment – which is essential in a forest where sloths live.
The team plans to test the Sloth Bot at Atlanta Botanical Garden, where it can monitor its environment for months at a time. Eventually, Egerstedt hopes the robot will travel to a cacao plantation in Costa Rica, where real sloths reside.
By employing the Sloth Robot to monitor long-term environmental changes, scientists hope to save species. Additionally, they intend to use it to help farmers better anticipate crop diseases, humidity levels and insect infestations so they can safeguard rare plants and endangered frogs alike.
